Welling United thrashed Tonbridge Angels 4-1 to move three points clear at the top of the Blue Square Bet South table last night.

Defender Anthony Achemapong scored two goals, taking his tally to the season to six goals.

Top scorer Ross Lafayette and Lee Clarke also got in on the act but it was not always plain sailing, especially when Tonbridge striker Frankie Collin reduced the deficit to 2-1 early in the second half.

After a nervy opening Welling took the lead six minutes before the break, Acheampong heading in a cross from Jack Obersteller.

They still had time to double their lead as Lafayette turned the ball past visiting keeper Lee Worgan via a deflection.

Collin beat Sam Mott to ensure Welling could not rest on their laurels but Clarke restored the two-goal advantage just after the hour mark.

Acheampong put the result beyond doubt with a close-range volley from Jamie Day’s corner with nine minutes remaining as the home side continued their title charge.

The Wings have still have two games in hand on title-challengers Salisbury City and travel to relegation-threatened Billericay Town on Saturday looking to extend their lead at the top.
