The wife of an Erith man who drowned in a hotel swimming pool is too distraught to make a comment.

Komba Kpikwa, 31, died at Down Hall Country House Hotel on April 27 along with 22-year-old Josephone Newahun Foday, 22, from Greenwich.

They were staying at the Hatfield Heath hotel together and Mr Kpikwa was treating Miss Foday to a surprise birthday treat.

The father-of-two, who originates from Sierra Leone, married his wife Gurpreet on November 25, 2008.

It is understood he worked at a branch of the Co-Operative supermarket, which is where he met Miss Foday earlier this year.

Both were found face down in the 10-metre pool by a member of staff at the hotel and were pronounced dead at the scene despite their best efforts.

The post-mortem revealed the cause of death as drowning and an inquest has been opened and adjourned by Eleanor McGann, the deputy coroner for Essex.
