Five-day work experience course puts them through their paces

PUPILS from a Dartford school got a taste of army life during a week of work experience with a difference.

Bexleyheath’s Royal Signals Army Reserves Regiment ran the five-day course, entitled Exercise Phoenix Experience, for nine students at the Wilmington Academy to give them an insight into military life and the military ethos.

The pupils learned about badges of rank, army history, military standards of personal care, map reading and much more - and were put through their paces at drills.

They also did practical work with the regiment’s mechanics, learning how the 4x4s and trucks are maintained and having a go at changing wheels, and even had a shot at operating the field communications system.

The students took part in a parade at the end of the course last week in front of their parents and their head of work experience, Tracy Murphy. Each received a certificate for completing the course.

Warrant Officer Ned Scobie, who ran the course, said: “I am really proud of the students. They have worked really hard.”

Ms Murphy added: “It is lovely to see the students all finish the week with flying colours.”
