Welling United top scorer Ross Lafayette scored late on to clinch an excellent win over Blue Square Bet South leaders Salisbury City on Saturday (17).

The striker scored a diving header from Kiernan Hughes-Mason’s cross with five minutes remaining for the only goal of the game to move the Wings up to fourth in the table and keep alive hopes of automatic promotion.

It capped a great defensive display by centre-backs by Fraser Franks and Anthony Acheampong, who kept the league’s top scorer James White at bay.

White came closest to scoring for the visitors but he missed a great chance after 12 minutes.

Welling are now eight points behind Salisbury with two games in hand.

Lafayette has scored nine goals this season after signing for the club in the summer.

Welling are next in action in the first round of the FA Trophy against Blue Square Premier high fliers Newport County at Park View Road on Saturday (24). The next league game is the following Tuesday (27) at home to Billericay Town.
