A YOUNG woman died after the car she was travelling in smashed into a tree on New Year's Day.

A 21-year-old woman who has not been named was one of seven people, including three children, travelling in the black Chevrolet Captiva when it crashed into a tree yesterday (1) at 1.40am.

The woman, who had been travelling in the front passenger seat at the time of the accident in Well Hall Road, Eltham was pronounced dead at the scene.

A post mortem has yet to be set.

The 31-year-old female driver suffered injuries to her arm but is not in a critical condition.

The rest of the passengers, including three children, were taken to hospitals in South and East London.

An eight-year-old girl remains in a critical condition after injuring her lungs, pelvis and wrist.

Another girl, also eight, is in a serious but stable condition after fracturing both arms and legs, as well as her head.

And a boy, whose age is yet to be confirmed, fractured his jaw and leg in the crash and is said to be in a serious but stable condition.

Another woman, whose age is yet to be confirmed, fractured her pelvis, her left ankle and her right elbow and is described by the police as being in a serious but stable condition.

A 28-year-old man was left with a fractured finger, bruising to his right eyebrow and a swollen right hand.

No arrests have been made and witnesses can call the Collision Investigation Unit at Catford on 020 8285 1574.
